Meeting in the Middle: Episode 1

Image
Earlier this week, Emily Brock and I sat down with Head Coach of the Ohio Northern Women’s Volleyball Team, Katie Kuhn, to chat about the importance of an appropriate social media for a student-athlete. The questions we asked Coach Kuhn were: 1. What is the #1 thing you look for with your student-athletes on their social media? 2. How do you feel about your athletes using social media? What are the pros and cons? 3. During your recruiting process, do you look at their social media accounts? 4. What is the most important advice you could give an athlete or student in general about the use of social media? 5. Since you’ve been a college athlete yourself, how have things changed from your time as an athlete to now? Since she’s been a coach for many years and was a student-athlete herself, she made the perfect expert to answer our questions. She gave great advice on how to keep your social media personal to you, but appropriate to others. Check out our podcast here ! We hope you

The Other 5 Fun Facts About Me

Image
Like I promised in my previous blog, here are the other five fun facts about me! 1. I like to listen to podcasts When I discovered podcasts, my life changed for the better. I stumbled upon podcasts when some of my favorite YouTubers, Remi Cruz and Alisha Marie, created their podcast called Pretty Basic . When I realized podcasts made long drives and workouts go quicker, I started searching for more. I love to listen to Rachel Hollis’ RISE podcast for motivation, How I Built This with Guy Raz for inspiring business startup stories and Stupid Genius by Emma Chamberlain for a good laugh and many moments of ah-ha! 2. If I didn’t major in marketing, I would purse event planning One of my favorite things to do is to plan a party or event. I thrive from how organized you must be while planning something. I love to put together games or decorations for a party to make it the best experience as possible. One of my favorite movies is 27 Dresses, because the lead actress, Katherine Heig

A Complete Guide To Gaining Followers

Image
Whether you run a brand’s social media or just interested in what a well put-together social media looks like, here’s some tips on what to do and what to avoid. Before I go into good habits of social media, I want to lay down some ground rules Guy Kawasaki suggests dodging. 1. Don’t buy followers When you want to gain “clout” on social media for your brand, you absolutely do not want to pay to gain more likes or followers. The biggest way to connect to your customers or followers is through interaction. You may have thousands of followers and likes, but probably only a hundred comments from actual people. 2. Don’t ask for followers If you want more followers, simply increase your use of social media or put out better content. If you publish a social post sounding desperate for followers, it most likely will turn away new followers.  3. Don’t highlight unfollowers Your current followers will not care nor see (unless they are experienced stalkers) who has unfo

Taking Action on Social Media

If you’ve been on social media the last few months, you know the tragedy that has hit California and Australia. If not, just keep reading because I’m about to tell you all about it. The state of California was a victim of wildfires, but my blog is going to focus on the Australian bushfires. Australia is no stranger to fires, but this gruesome bushfire season wasn’t like any others. Why am I relating this to social media you ask? Because the power of the internet allowed an enormous amount of money be raised for the people affected. When the natural disaster hit, people were ready to help. Social media platforms created an easy access to help from all over the world. An Australian comedian and actor, Celeste Barber, raised more than $32 million, through Facebook, to support fire stations fighting against the horrific bushfires. During the time, I know that every other Instagram story was a repost of disturbing pictures and story links to this very hot topic. Many famous Australian

5 Fun Facts About Me

Image
Before I get too far in blogging, here’s five fun facts about me. 1.      I have a small family My family consists of me, my dad (Rick), mom (Patty), sister (Erika) and our dog Levi. My sister is 24 years old and is my best friend. Don’t get me wrong, since I’m the youngest we had our fair share of fights back in the day. My parents are the most supportive parents and I couldn’t be more thankful for them. I know they’re reading this, so I love you all! 2.      I have bowled since I was 3 years old For a little backstory, my grandparents built the bowling alley, Pla-Mor Lanes , in my hometown back in 1976. My parents bought it from them in 2007 and now looks very different inside. I guess you can say I was born into a bowling family but I loved the sport from the very start. I bowled competitively from middle school up until my senior year of high school. Throughout my high school career, we accomplished two DII State Championships, one DII State Runners-Up finish and

The Art of Hashtaging

Image
While reading the book, “The Art of Social Media,” I found the part relating to hashtags very interesting. On any social media platform, a hashtag is very important. If you want your post to stand out among others, use a hashtag or two. Typically, the hashtag is a word that sums up what the written post is about. The hashtag is one powerful symbol in the forever growing worldwide web.       I like using the hashtag feature when I want to search for a specific thing. For example, if I want to find pictures of polar bears on Instagram, I will type in #polarbears in the search bar. Please follow that link, you won’t regret it. Also, I think hashtags at the end of a post gives it some character and something to look toward to. I especially like when the hashtags are funny and witty. By using a hashtag, you can reach past your niche of followers. I can handle two or three hashtags, but I can promise you I will not read any of them if there are over six. Hashtags give an audience a

How Brands use TikTok as a Marketing Strategy

Image
Welcome back! I am very interested in how brands follow trends through using social media, hence my social media minor. When I think of current social media topics, I think of TikTok instantly. TikTok is an app where users post short videos where you can add filters, background music and stickers. TikTok originated in China and now is the fastest growing app. The platform was created for boosting the user’s creativity and create joy in people’s lives. TikTok’s target market are those older than the age of 13, but most of the users fall into Generation Z (born after 1996). Recently, companies have boarded the TikTok train, and have began to use it as a marketing weapon.             There are three big things that companies focus on when promoting their products or services through TikTok. The three are using a brand created hashtag, reaching out to TikTok influencers or simply having their ad pop-up while using to app. Companies such as Chipotle, LUSH, NBA, San Dieg

Top 3 Reasons Why I Came to ONU

During my senior year of high school, it was time to think of where I wanted to be following high school graduation. I have played the sport of volleyball since fifth grade, so my goal was to find a university that I go excel both academically and athletically. After four previous college visits, I stepped onto the campus of Ohio Northern on a rainy August afternoon. With the trees full of bloom and that strong small-town feeling, I knew I was in the right place. Here are my top three reasons why I chose to come to ONU. 1. Faculty and Community I love the small campus feel but love the small class sizes even more. Having the professors know your name, major and your story is refreshing. I know I can go to my professor’s office and they will help me with a homework problem I’m struggling with, offer extra one-on-one teaching or even give life advice. When I graduate college, I feel like I have an abundant of connections to guide me down the right professional career path. I feel

Monday Night Bachelor Recap

Image
Welcome to my first blog! What better way to start it off then to talk about The Bachelor? I am a very avid watcher of the reality TV show and would love to share my thoughts about what happened in Monday night's episode. The second episode kicked off with Peter determining Hannah Brown’s fate. If you don’t know who Hannah Brown is, she’s what I like to call a reality TV show hog. She was a contestant on Colton Underwood’s Season 23 of The Bachelor but was eliminated in week 7. Hannah went on to be The Bachelorette to kick off Season 15. Long story short, Hannah walked away from Season 15 with no ring and a broken heart. Peter was torn between asking Hannah to join the remaining contestants or sending her home as she did to him during The Bachelorette. I am not the biggest Hannah Brown fan, so I was glad to see her go. The group date was canceled due to the ongoing love fiasco. With no rose given out during the short group date, everyone's intentions and hopes were high du
